Corks -a definite advance in eliminating corked wine. For several years there has been a debate raging, nay war waging, between the cork industry and the metal or plastic closure manufacturers for bottles of wine. There has been a problem with natural cork. The problem may well have been wide spread due to the Portuguese Revolution and the lack of good husbandry in the cork forests. That was several decades ago but cork trees last for centuries and the precious bark can only be peeled from the cork oak every nine years. Thus there may well have been a long hangover with the problem of TCA contaminating cork closures. The war started with the introduction of plastic closures. We have all encountered them in cheap New World wines. They are the stoppers that break you favourite corkscrew. Some people even said that one of the manufactures of expensive cork pullers had sponsored the plastic closure. I don
