James Payne wins
James Payneof the Sharrow Bay Hotel in the Lake District,fought off three other contestants at Hotelympia on Tuesday8 February towin the Port Wine Challenge 2000 competition sponsored by thePort WineInstitute and theAcademy of Food & Wine Service. From over 80 paper entries submitted from keen Academy membersnationwide, 4 were chosen to go forward to compete at a head to head challengein front of a panel of professional judges which included Roy Ackerman of theRestaurant Factory, Gerard Basset MW, Technical Director of the Academy andProprietor of the Hotel du Vin chain, Douglas Wregg, a journalist for Caterer& Hotelkeeper and Carlos Mendes Moreira from the Instituto do Vinho doPorto, Portugal. The final featured blind tastings of four Portstyles, a"scenario" where finalists were asked to recommend a Port styleto accompany a dessert course and a fast pacedMastermindquizwhich tested both knowledge and the strongest of nerves. James Payne, who has worked previously at Le Pont de la Tourand Chateau Prieure Lichine in Bordeaux before joining Sharrow Bay nearly 3years ago, will be flying off to the spectacular Douro Valley in NorthernPortugal, home to Port, later this year as part of his prize. Matthieu Duvalof the Putney Bridge Restaurant (London),Alessandro Cominat The Riverside Restaurant (Cambridge) and ClaireTissot-Merlautof Harveys Restaurant (Bristol) provided tough competitionalongside James Payne. Although there can be only one winner, each finalist wentaway with a decanter each and a mixed selection of Port.
