The following awards were presented at Spencer House, the London home of the Earls of Spencer: Tim Atkin won the Black Label Award for articles in the UK newspapers The Observer Life and Decanter Magazine. Andrew Jefford won the Ivory Label Award for his BBC Radio Food programmes. Danielle Cernilli & Carlo Petrini won the Rose Label Award for Italian wines 1998. Oz Clarke won the Special Millennium Award for outstanding contribution to wine education and communication. The prizes were presented by Madame Mora, the President of Champagne Lanson. For those of us who are very keen on horse racing it was very good news to hear that Lanson are sponsoring two races at the Goodwood summer meeting. They are the Champagne Lanson Sussex Stakes and the Champagne Lanson Vintage Stakes. * The next evening John Radford got the double up, his book also

won the Glenfiddich drinks book of the year. The bookies kept their satchels intact, they could not pay out on the double as John had heard the result before he arrived at the prize giving ceremony. The PR company had sent out the results to the media beforehand, forgetting that as he is part of the media, John's colleagueswould see the release and telephone him to congratulate him. ** Now hardly appropriate, John Radford is to play Baron Hardup in Panto this Christmas.
