Marlborough wineries beat several Australian wineries in an Australian wine competition at the weekend.

For the first time in 15 years, New Zealand wines were allowed to be entered into the boutique wine awards.

Marlborough winery Blind River won the Dan Murphy Trophy for best wine of the show with its Blind River Pinot Noir 2007. Meanwhile, its The Sisters Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc won the top of its class.

It was the first time in the awards history one winery took both accolades.
Fellow Marlborough winery Johanneshof Cellars won two top of class awards. The Other Whites class for its Gewurztraminer 2008 and the Sweet Wines class for its Johanneshof Cellars Noble Last Harvest Riesling 2007.

Meanwhile, Marlborough winery No1 Family Estate won best White Sparkling for its No1 Cuvee.

There were 18 categories with more than 1100 wines entered across the board. New Zealand wines accounted for 12 per cent of the entries but won 30 per cent of the awards.
