'Johnny' Hugel dies

'Johnny' Hugel dies at the young age of 84.
9th June 2009.

The every young Johnny Hugel, ambassador par excellent for Alsace and her wines for his whole adult life.

Jean Frederic Hugel leaves an empire for all Alsacians, the empire of wonderful, wizard wines. Pretty well single handedly Johnny shouted the great words of great wines and made Alsace perhaps the third greatest French wine region.

The last time I saw Johnny was at lunch in the Gavroche where his wines with Roux's food made music for me. His dedecation, humour and skills improved the idea of white wines from the Alsace. Not forgetting the Pinot Noir.

I would ask you all to pop into your cellar or go to your wine seller find a bottle of Hugel's wine and drink to Johnnies memory. Of course the wine should be Alsace.

I will never forget the pleasure he gave.

My God rest his soul.
