A Summer In Gascony

by Martin Calder

Published by Nicolas Brealey Publishing @ £8.99 / $16.95

Ah! Gascony, and to hell with Burgundy!

As you know Gascony is bordered in the North by the river Garonne and by the Pyrenees in the South with Toulouse to the East. This means the Bay of Biscay makes up the Western border.
Like many regions of France Gascony has its own language not that we need to learn it to travel there, but do pick a few please and thank yous to enable one's safe passage through the kitchens and vineyards.

Take a large glass of Armagnac and peruse the recipes and menus of this deeply rural region. Remember too that the Gascons were allies of the English against their common foe, the French. The English used to ship huge quantities of wine from Gascony making both countries rich and muddled headed to some extent.

Salut, les gars, hi chaps and enjoy this deeply interesting book while learning heaps of new froggie things.

The book is sub-titled 'The Other South of France', a rather different one to the smart part of the riviera, an older an more traditional France. One Brits love and will always cherish.

A charming and amusing book for all Francofiles.
