Havana Club first came to my notice in the late 60's, it was impossible to purchase a bottle in the shops at that time. Fortunately I had a client, the National Bank of Havana, and the manager Glyn would invite me to lunch from time to time. I always accepted, not just to keep business relationships in good order but because they gave one a leaving present. Often I staggered out into a city street full of good food and wine with a party bag dangling from my right hand. In the bag was a box of five cigars, Havanas of course, and a bottle of Havana Club. The only other places I found this silver nectar were Brighton dogs and Trader Vic's, but these discoveries were some years later. The first was after racing with Dan Abbott and we had done our dough so he suggested that we went to the dogs. We did in every way or at least I did Dan did get a forecast of traps one and five which made him the money to buy a round. It was a round of Havana Club. The story told since then is that when Fidel Castro took over Cuba the Bacardi family left the country. In due time the old distillery changed it's name to Havana Club. In my innocence I had always assumed that Ron Bacardi was the given and family name of the founder. It was not until I went to Cuba that I found out ron means rum.
